Harmful gambling often starts as entertainment and then consumes more time, money, and emotional energy than you planned.
Behavioural signs
- Spending more time or money than you first decided, or trying to win back losses.
- Hiding spending or lying to people close to you.
- Neglecting work, study, or sleep because of gambling.
Emotional signs
- Irritability when someone comments on gambling or when you try to cut down.
- Anxiety or low mood tied to bets or debt.
- Using gambling to escape stress or painful memories.

Family doctors and provincial lines can guide you. CAMH publishes reputable public information on addiction and mental health. Gamblers Anonymous offers peer meetings in many communities.
