Cognitive-behavioural therapy and gambling: introductory notes
What structured programmes often focus on — educational summary, not a treatment plan.
Editorial article — not sponsored, not a substitute for professional advice. We do not sell treatment or earn commissions from organizations mentioned.
We are not therapists. In Canada, regulated mental health professions (and titles) vary by province — always verify registration with your provincial college or regulator before starting care.
CBT links thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. With gambling, it can map triggers (stress, boredom, conflict) and beliefs (“this time I’ll win it back”).
Example goals
- Delay urges (for example, ten to fifteen minutes).
- Replace gambling rituals with planned activities.
- Question ideas about “luck” and “can’t-lose systems.”
Research often associates stable progress with structured psychological therapies plus practical tools (money management, exclusions). Ask a regulated clinician what is available where you live.
