Gambling harm is not only “an individual habit”: it can affect money, trust, and safety at home.
If you gamble
Choose a calm moment; tell the truth in small steps; say you want to change and will seek professional or helpline support. Avoid huge confrontations right after a loss.
If you are a family member
Long lectures at high volume rarely help. Use “I” statements (“I’m scared about the rent”) instead of permanent labels. Be cautious about paying debts without specialized advice.
Support for you
Provincial helplines and organizations such as CAMH can point family members to resources. See our helpline page for links.
